Coming from Milazzo, the first island is the wonderful Vulcano and we can assure you that there is no better postcard to welcome to the Aeolian Islands! The image of the Gran Cratere della Fossa, which appears majestic from the Tyrrhenian Sea, is enough to break the seal of your holiday. The main attraction is this imposing volcano, whose crater offers breathtaking views of the entire archipelago.
You can get to the top, where you can see a huge chasm surrounded by yellow and ochre rocks caused by sulfur gas. Also, under the volcano, you will see the view of the small Vulcanello Peninsula. Here lies the Valley of the Monsters, where majestic lava formations of various shapes and sizes develop: admire them at sunset to appreciate them with the right light!
Finally, even if we are talking about a volcanic beach, let’s not forget the Asino Beach. It is located on the other side of Vulcanello and is a long stretch of black sand beach in the middle of a desert where you can enjoy the beauty of the most remote nature.
LIPARI
Lipari is the largest and most populous of the Aeolian Islands. However, it has a remarkable old town easily accessible. The first structure you will notice arriving on the island is undoubtedly the massive Castle of Lipari, built by Charles V in 1500 on a Neolithic structure. The history of the island, in fact, is quite ancient and you can find put more in the extraordinary Archaeological Museum.
Lipari offers spectacular natural landscapes, beaches and viewpoints. Lipari’s volcanic activity has ceased and this phenomenon has left several craters now dormant. Among the most panoramic points not to be missed is the Quattrocchi Belvedere, from which you can see the Faraglioni di Pietra Menalda and the active Vulcano Crater.
If you like beaches, Lipari has enough to offer, from Canneto to Spiaggia Bianca. But, above all, do not miss the famous and enchanting Acquacalda Beach, with its amazing pumice quarry that rises on the water creating breathtaking contrasts.
SALINA
As we continue our journey through the Aeolian Islands, we come across the beautiful island of Salina. It is, in fact, the third island off Milazzo, and is indisputably among the things to see in the Aeolian Islands. It is also the greenest of the islands of the Archipelago, formed by two volcanic cones surrounded by woods and vegetation.
Salina consists of steep coasts connected by canals that lead to spectacular coves. Santa Maria di Salina is a picturesque village at the foot of the Fossa dei Felci. This volcanic crater is protected by dense vegetation, and you can reach it by a path that allows you to admire an enchanted view.
Finally, do not forget Lingua and Malfa. These two small and picturesque villages allow you to enjoy the authentic Aeolian atmosphere and, at the same time, the delicious local cuisine. Do not miss the Beach of Pollara with its cliffs and caves of Saracen origin, that became famous thanks to the movie "The postman" by Massimo Troisi.
PANAREA
The oldest and smaller island of the archipelago, eastward from Salina. At the bottom is the peak of a magmatic bath that still feeds fumaroles and hot springs. Once in San Pietro, you can choose from a variety of trails that lead to the beaches of the island.
Among these, Cala Junco is often considered the best of the Archipelago, while Calcara Beach is famous for its crystal clear waters and fumaroles that erupt from the rocks, warming the water temperature. Cala degli Zimmari, however, is the only secluded beach on the island. Finally, the Cape Milazzese Promontory is a true paradise. At sunset you can admire a breathtaking view of the bay where there is an ancient prehistoric village.
STROMBOLI
When you arrive in Panarea, the view that opens up looking at Stromboli will be unforgettable. In fact, this is the most famous and spectacular island of the entire archipelago. Stromboli is a massive volcano 924 meters high that rises from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The main attraction of Stromboli, of course, is its crater but you can follow the path on its peaks only up to a certain altitude.
The Stromboli volcano in fact erupts regularly with a frequency of about an hour! The best way to appreciate this natural wonder is to reach the Sciara del Fuoco by sea. This is, in fact, the best point to see the erupting volcano and the lava flow pouring into the water.
Do not miss the black sands of Strombolicchio, the peninsula that marks the northernmost point of Sicily and the picturesque village of Ginostra, with its narrow streets and caves overlooking the sea.
FILICUDI
Filicudi is the first island you meet sailing along the western portion of the Aeolian Islands. Also in this case it is a volcanic island that culminates at 774 meters above sea level with Monte Fossa Felci. Filicudi, in any case, is the ideal location to alternate sea and heights. Here waters are more transparent than any other islands and the inland routes are really very particular and suggestive.
Filicudi is an ancient island that has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Don’t miss the historic home of Capo Graziano, a spectacular archaeological site dating back to 3000 BC. Finally, if you want to continue to Alicudi, stop to see La Canna, the spectacular colonnade that straddles the two islands.
ALICUDI
It's nicknamed "the secret island". This should be enough to understand why Alicudi is one of those islands that should definitely be visited. Here, in fact, there are no roads and the island consists of vegetation that covers the lava and basalt cliffs that rise up to 675 meters. When you get to the village of Alicudi, you will notice that time seems to stand still.
We advise you to walk through the streets and neighborhoods of the village before continuing along the mule track that leads to the ancient volcano, now dormant, and the beautiful Bezzina Beach. A true paradise of tranquility, out of the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
It’s the northeastern tip of Sicily. Capo Peloro beach is very popular among the people of Messina. We are right at the confluence of the Strait of Messina, the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea. In this area you can admire beautiful landscapes with a wide variety of flora and fauna. The temperatures are pleasant thanks to the continuous breeze.
TORRE FARO
The village of Torre Faro is a small fishing village that recalls the myth of the goddess Karidi, daughter of Poseidon and Gia. On one side the Ionian Sea with its fresh, calm and transparent waters and on the other the warm embrace of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
SCILLA
This is a small fishing village that still lives of the ancient fishing activities and that the tourism industry has not yet affected. Walking through its alleys, it is not difficult to meet fishermen who build nets, shelter boats or prepare to take to the sea. Lunch or dinner on the restaurants directly on the sea completes the ideal day.
TROPEA
This stretch of coast on the Tyrrhenian Sea is called Costa degli Dei with spectacular cliffs and sunny beaches.
MOUNTAINS OF SAND
A beautiful natural scenery away from the town, these sand hills rise above the rocks and overlook the sea. These are small rocky headlands covered with sand blown by the wind. These dunes expand gently, and once at the top you can see a magnificent view over the coast and, for a bit of fun, you can slide down entering into the cristal clear waters.
CAPO MILAZZO
The Marine Protected Area of Capo Milazzo is, without a doubt, a real paradise.
LAGHETTI DI MARINELLO
Together with the lakes of Ganzirri, it is one of the few examples of coastal brackish environment in northeastern Sicily. A wonderful lagoon area continuously subject to morphological changes that have created very particular and evocative salt lakes.
CAPO VATICANO
A multitude of coves with sandy and crystalline bottoms, cut between rocks, smooth tuff cliffs and sharp cliffs overlooking the sea, with gorges and caves wrapped in magic. Here the sea has shades of colors ranging from turquoise to deep blue and blue.
CAPO CALAVA'
Suggestive backdrops for snorkeling and rocks from which to dive in a clear sea.
It is here that Homer had the inspiration for the titanic struggle between Odysseus and Polyphemus, but not only. A truly magical place.
GIARDINI-NAXOS
Giardini Naxos enjoys one of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the Ionian Sea, characterized by very fine sand or small gravel. The best beach is Recanati, very wide, where there are both equipped beaches and free beach.
ISOLA BELLA
A unique location and an extraordinary natural environment, is certainly among the most beautiful and popular places in Sicily.
